The team who look after your eyes

Peter

Peter passed his professional exams at the first attempt, in 2000. He’s an optometrist – that is, an eyecare professional who provides primary vision care. That means Peter is an expert in delivering eye and vision tests, treating eye conditions, and prescribing glasses and contact lenses.

Peter worked for a large multiple for over ten years, where he enjoyed mentoring students and newly-qualified optometrists. He later joined local practice Bill & Taylor, later taking ownership. The practice has been based in Topsham for 29 years.

“We’re independent, so we can always do what’s best for our patients. We’re able to spend time with them, to properly listen and build a relationship.”

Laura

Laura is a dispensing optician. So her training goes beyond the ‘optical advisers’ who might help you in the High St. Laura works alongside Peter to help patients choose and fit the right glasses or contact lenses based on their prescriptions. She also makes adjustments to frames for comfort and proper fit.

“I had some problems with my vision as a child, so I’ve always been fascinated by eyes. I enjoy helping our patients and making a difference in their lives.”

Sue

Sue is a dispensing optician with several decades’ experience. You could say she’s seen it all, including the scary days before health and safety.

“Back in the day we sometimes used Bunsen burners to adjust and repair frames. Many older frames were made of materials like celluloid or acetate. So they needed to be softened with heat.”

Suzie

Suzie is co-owner and practice manager. She’s been in optics for over 20 years, and was a troubleshooter for a big chain of opticians. These days, Suzie is the primary purchaser in the team, and an expert on glasses and their frames. We hand-pick all our frames from specialist manufacturers or suppliers.

“There are no high-pressure sales here. We don’t have salespeople lurking when you just want to browse. When our patients feel welcome and relaxed, everything else will take care of itself.”

Katie

Katie is a student dispensing optician, working towards her qualifications via distance learning. Like the other members of the team, she has previously worked for a large multiple.

“Being family-run means we have extra time for our patients. They get a better understanding from their eye tests, because we can explain more and answer questions.”

Jack

Jack is the team’s locum optometrist, stepping in when cover is needed. He worked for several High Street retailers, but soon realised he wanted to help patients rather than sell to them.

He’s been based around Exeter for more than 15 years. Jack’s worked with the practice before, but these days more consistently.

“What Peter and Suzie have created here is great. There’s no sales pressure on the team or the patients. They’re always on hand. They’re just really nice people.”
